There has little to celebrate the last nine plus months with the nation dealing with a pandemic that has caused Old Dominion to suspend all athletic activities. Now we could rejoice as the return of sports will begin at the end of the month as the men’s basketball team prepares to launch their season and the women’s team shortly after. The season could bring jubilation and tranquility to the fans and the student body as we continue to fight the battle with Covid-19. With a statewide rule of only allowing no more than a 1,000 fans, it’s imperative that the fans be at their loudest to give the teams that home court advantage that’s paramount.

The men’s team begins hoops on the road the night before Thanksgiving as they play the University of Maryland before coming home for their season opener Saturday, November 28th, against William & Mary. The remaining home schedule for the men’s basketball team is December 22nd, against Virginia Wesleyan. The Monarchs will see nine home games after the New Year, which will depend on state regulations and how the nation continues to follow safety measures while practicing sanitation habits.

The women’s basketball team will begin at home December 3rd, as they host non conference opponent William & Mary. The team looks to build on a year of success at home and within the conference with new Head Coach DeLisha Milton-Jones. Coach D brings WNBA experience and championship, the sort of pedigree that builds something special in the locker room that translates on the hardwood floor.

As the teams prepare to play a season which will face close monitoring, it’s important that all participating parties follow the guidelines put in place to continue play. The collegiate game has seen several cancellations and delays because of the Corona Virus, we need to do our part so we are able to attend our beloved Monarchs basketball teams. Go Pride!
