Artist John Chang uses a mix of Chinese symbols and calligraphy to tie together his past, present and future in this new, innovative exhibition at the Gordon Art Galleries
“Calligraphy: A Journey Without Destination” at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries showcases various works from Chang, who exemplifies his experience of being born in China.
“I was born in Shanghai, shaped by two systems: one of collective control, the other of consumer freedom. Neither fully mine. Between them, I found my path,” the exhibit wall reads upon entering.
His works are solely black and white, as he aims to represent negative and positive energy, night and day, and life and death.
While most of his works are abstract pieces of black ink on wood panels, a notable piece contains white shoes with Chinese symbols in black ink on them, atop a mostly black canvas titled “Shoe-Journey.” The piece is meant to represent the weight that shoes carry, and their ability to move forward despite situations wearers might find themselves in.
Through these exquisite pieces, Chang hopes to reclaim the belief that the written word can shift the world, and to create a reality where memories and innovation can thrive.
This exhibit will be on view at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries until Nov. 15, 2025.
