In a men’s soccer match at home, ODU competed against Georgia State in a physical 90-minute game that resulted in a scoreless draw.
The game was characterized by a physical nature, with numerous cards issued to both teams. Head coach Tenant McVea expressed disappointment in the team’s performance.
“I think the players are as disappointed in themselves tonight as the staff is in that performance. At home in front of another great crowd, I just feel we didn’t bring the right intensity into the game. We have to go and fix that this week because next week in Kentucky is a difficult proposition on the road. It’s another good team, and we have to raise our levels to go there and pick up points.”
Early in the game, the Monarchs had a chance when freshman Marcelo Randolf took a shot off a corner set piece, but it did not result in a goal. The Panthers countered with two corners, also without success. Later in the first half, ODU’s striker Michael Eberle had two attempts from corners, which were likewise unsuccessful.
After 45 minutes of action, both teams displayed similar states in terms of shots (6 vs. 7) and corners (3 vs. 4), a balanced performance from both sides.
The second half saw continued offensive struggles on both ends of the pitch, with neither team able to secure a win. In the closing stages of the game, the Monarchs had a significant opportunity with three corners in two minutes (79’,79’,80’), but failed to convert.
During the game, the level of tension increased, resulting in a red card for GSU’s Gavin Williams and a second yellow for ODU’s Andrew Bennett. As a consequence, both teams had 10 players for the final six minutes of the match. Despite sustained efforts and several yellow cards at the last minute, neither team succeeded in scoring, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
The Monarchs encountered challenges in generating scoring opportunities, as evidenced by their eight corner kicks and 12 shots, which resulted in only two shots on target. Similarly, the Panthers faced difficulties, recording 12 shots and 7 corner kicks, with only four shots on goal.
Following a disappointing performance at home, McVea’s squad is gearing up to compete against the Kentucky Wildcats in a Sun Belt match in Lexington this upcoming Friday at 7 pm.
