Following a loss at Auburn last weekend, the ODU women’s soccer team was eager to maintain their strong performance at home. The game against Coastal was characterized by Coastal’s solid defense and remarkable saves by Goalkeeper Vivienne Carr, who made ten saves as ODU and Coastal settled for a 1-1 draw. Despite numerous scoring opportunities, the Lady Monarchs managed 28 total shots, with 11 on target.
Their home record before this fixture against Coastal Carolina stood at 4-1 for the season. The first half of the game saw the Lady Monarchs facing several offside calls, missing crucial opportunities to take the lead.
In the 71st minute, Coastal Carolina seized the offensive, resulting in a goal by Julia Ziegenfuss, her first of the season. This late goal left Old Dominion’s fans anticipating their team’s response, which came in the 82nd minute. Freshman forward Brooke Edwards scored her second goal of the season, off a corner kick assisted by senior forward Yulia Khrystiuk. Despite their late offensive efforts, the Lady Monarchs could not secure another goal, ending the game in a 1-1 draw and bringing their overall record to 5-3-1, marking their first draw of the season.
Reflecting on the game, Lady Monarchs Head Coach Angie Hinds remarked, “I thought our kids just pressed the living daylights out of them, and we chanced and chanced. And every time we pressured the keeper, she made a couple of great saves, but we just kept with it, and then inevitably, when you have that much of the ball and that much pressure, there will be a chance to get a goal.”
Following the hard-fought draw, the Lady Monarchs are look ahead to hosting Louisiania-Monroe (7-3) at the ODU Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. next Friday.
