Horror games have been dominant in the gaming community for years. The sheer adrenaline and thrill you get from surviving in terrifying environments are second to none. Many great horror games have come out in the past, and there are plenty more to come in the future. I’ll be giving the most recent and anticipated games a horror game fan should look forward to in this list.

The Quarry – June 10 – (Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC, and Switch)

“The Quarry” has a great voice acting cast, featuring horror actors like Ted Raimi and Lin Shaye, along with other actors like Brenda Song and Justice Smith. This game can easily be compared to “Until Dawn” where the voice actors’ in-game characters are modeled after their appearances. This game evokes a  nostalgic setting that harkens back to slasher classics like “Friday the 13th” or “Evil Dead”. ”The Quarry” uses a classic plot set up by putting teenagers in the woods. The trailer only gives the most barebones peek into the plot but shows a promising story. From the looks of it, teenagers are not only dealing with murderous local folk but also something monstrous. 

Evil Dead: The Game – May 13 – (Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC, and Switch)

This one was a no-brainer. “Evil Dead” is a horror cult classic that has left its mark on the horror genre. This game features the beloved protagonist Ash Williams and his friends going through the familiar locations of “Evil Dead”. This listing is a survival horror where you have to hack and slash your way through hordes of deadites and other ravenous creatures. The endgame objective is to seal away the Kandarian demon spawned from the cursed book, Necronomicon. You can expect horrifying thrills and brutal combat as you trudge through hostile territory. This game also features a co-op and PvP mode, so you can either survive with your friends or make their lives miserable by going against them. 

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl – December 8 – (Xbox Series X, PC)

Originally titled “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl”, the title was changed to reflect Ukrainian spelling instead of the Russian spelling. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series have been cult classic video games for a relatively long time now. While the game series itself is not mainly in the “horror” genre, it instills a tremendous sense of dread and fear. The game is set in 2006, where the power plant at Chernobyl has mysteriously exploded again. The affected area is called the Zone, and you will be playing as a scavenger within it. You can expect to deal with mutant creatures, aggressive members from different factions, and an open world that lives on its own even when you’re not there to see it in-game. This game series is known for its bleak environments, tense encounters, and gameplay that will throw you into shark-infested waters regardless of where you are. It’s ruthless, but it keeps you immersed in the harrowing world it shows you. If you’re a fan of shooter RPGs and post-apocalyptic horror, this game is for you.
