President John R. Broderick announced May 18th, 2020 that he will be stepping down from his position of university President come summer 2021. President Broderick has been part of the ODU community for over twenty-six years and has served as the President of the university for thirteen years.

It is not known yet as to who will be President Broderick’s predecessor however, the search for the new President is estimated to take about a year. In his letter, President Broderick addressed that he will still be giving his assistance to budgeting for the 2021-2022 academic year and “provide any other desired assistance.”

President Broderick says that he will be spending more time with his family after his successor takes his place. President Broderick will then come back to take on the role of President Emeritus to provide more assistance to the Board of Visitors and his successor to conclude some the projects and initiatives at the university.

While reflecting on how time as President, Broderick says that a highlight of his tenure as President was signing the diplomas of his family members who graduated from the university. In his letter, President Broderick credits his his wife, Kate Broderick for her leadership and how she “she has been instrumental in some of our largest gifts and meaningful community partnerships.”
